Celebrating the USA Northeast Province

New York Province of the Society of Jesus

Fr. John J. Cecero, SJ, is the provincial of the new USA Northeast Province which is home to approximately 550 Jesuits.

After many years of strategic planning, and with the approval of Father Adolfo Nicolás, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, the New England Province and the New York Province of Jesuits united to form the USA Northeast Province on December 3, 2014, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier.

Fr. John J. Cecero, SJ, serves as provincial of this new province, which includes eight states and stretches from Maine to New Jersey and beyond to Jamaica, Micronesia and the Middle East. Roughly 550 Jesuits are a part of the new province.

The creation of this new province has been in planning for years as part of the larger reconfiguration of the U.S. Jesuit provinces. The new structure will allow the Society of Jesus to better respond to the changing needs and demographics of the Church.

Fr. Nicolás approved the recommendation that the new province be established on December 3, earlier than the originally planned date of July 31, 2015. “We agree that it is time to move forward with confidence, trusting in God and following our strong desires to be energetic and united in our mission,” said Fr. John J. Cecero, SJ.

The main office of the USA Northeast Province is located in New York City. For friends and benefactors, there will be very little change in their day-to-day relationship with the Society. The Jesuits will continue to have strong ministries that will flourish in the years to come.

“The new province that begins today is a movement of grace in our midst, and while grace sheds light on our next steps, it does not illumine the entire journey,” Fr. Cecero said in a message to his brother Jesuits this week. “That takes nothing less than shared faith, courageous hope and an ardent love for Christ and one another.”

Celebrating the Start of the School Year

Recently, Fr. John J. Cecero, SJ, provincial of the New York Province, celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit for Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J., (September 12) and Canisius High School in Buffalo, N.Y. (September 19).

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is one of the oldest traditions observed by the Society of Jesus, and serves as an invocation of the Holy Spirit to assist all members of the school in their pursuit of knowledge and wisdom for the coming school year. Most Catholic schools, especially Jesuit schools and universities, celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit. It is a tradition almost as old as the Society itself, going back to the first Jesuit school in Messina, Sicily, in 1548.

The Masses also included the signing of sponsorship agreements, which reaffirmed Saint Peter’s and Canisius’ identities as Jesuit schools. At Saint Peter’s, Fr. Cecero joined Board Chairman Mr. Phil McGovern, ’76, and at Canisius he joined Board Chairman Robert Reger ’66, as they signed the document.

These are the First Masses of the Holy Spirit that Fr. Cecero celebrated as provincial of the New York Province.

We have exciting news to share. After many years of strategic planning, and with the approval of Father Adolfo Nicolás, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, the New England Province and the New York Province of Jesuits will unite to form the USA Northeast Province on December 3, 2014, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier. Fr. John J. Cecero, SJ, recently appointed provincial of the New York Province, will become the provincial of this new province.

The USA Northeast Province will include eight states and will stretch from Maine to New Jersey and beyond to Jamaica, Micronesia and the Middle East. Roughly 550 Jesuits will be part of the new province.

The creation of this new province has been in planning for years as part of the larger reconfiguration of the U.S. Jesuit provinces. The new structure will allow the Society of Jesus to better respond to the changing needs and demographics of the Church.

Fr. Nicolás agreed with our recommendation that the new province be established on December 3, earlier than the originally planned date of July 31, 2015. We agree that it is time to move forward with confidence, trusting in God and following our strong desires to be energetic and united in our mission.

The main office of the USA Northeast Province will be located in New York City. For our friends and benefactors, there will be very little change in the day-to-day relationship with the Society. We will continue to have strong ministries that will flourish in the years to come.

Fr. Myles N. Sheehan’s term as provincial of the New England Province will conclude on December 2, 2014. After a brief sabbatical, he is looking forward to being missioned by Fr. Cecero to a new assignment.

We ask you to join us in a prayer of gratitude for all the good works of the New England and New York Provinces over the years, and for a renewed sense of mission, enthusiasm, and openness to new apostolic possibilities as our new province is created on the Feast of St. Francis Xavier.

Please be assured of our prayers for you. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with you in service of the Church for the greater glory of God.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Myles N. Sheehan, SJ, Provincial, New England Province

(NEW YORK, N.Y., December 9, 2013) – Fr. John J. Cecero, S.J., has been appointed by Father General Adolfo Nicolás, S.J., as the next provincial of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits).

Fr. Cecero will begin his leadership role on July 31, 2014. He succeeds Fr. David S. Ciancimino, S.J., who has served as provincial of the New York Province since 2008. As part of the ongoing national realignment of Jesuit provinces, Fr. Cecero will become the provincial of the new province that will form when the New York and New England Provinces unite on July 31, 2015. Fr. Myles Sheehan, S.J., the current provincial of the New England Province, will complete his tenure at that time.

A Jesuit of the Maryland Province, Fr. Cecero has served in a variety of leadership positions and has spent considerable time in both the New England and New York Provinces. For 15 years he taught as professor of psychology at Fordham University (1998-2013). He is currently finishing a sabbatical year after serving as rector of the Spellman Hall Jesuit Community since 2007. He also served as a consultor to the provincial of the New York Province from 2004-2012.

“I am grateful to Fr. Cecero for accepting this important mission from Father General,” said Fr. Ciancimino. “John has a long track record of generous service to both the Church and the Society of Jesus, and I know that his leadership experience and tremendous devotion to the Society will enable him to provide direction with creativity and insight.”

“I am humbled and deeply grateful for this new opportunity to foster and promote the mission of the Society in the New York Province, especially as we prepare to join with the New England Province in 2015,” Fr. Cecero said. “I eagerly look forward to collaborating with brother Jesuits and our companions in ministry to that end. Building on the relationships and structures that were forged so earnestly and skillfully by Frs. Ciancimino and Sheehan, I am confident that with God’s abundant grace our communities and apostolates will flourish in the years to come. That is my fervent prayer.”

Fr. Cecero entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, Pa., on September 3, 1976. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1989, and professed Final Vows on December 3, 2006. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., he attended St. Joseph’s Preparatory School. Since joining the Jesuits he has earned a Bachelor of Arts in literary studies from St. Michael’s Institute in Spokane, Wash., and a Master of Divinity and a Master of Theology from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology, then located in Cambridge, Mass. In 1996 he was awarded a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
