Fr. Ralph Rivera, SJ, the chaplain at Xavier High School in New York City recently wrote a reflection on vocations. He discusses the parable where Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a merchant selling everything that he has for a single pearl. Initially this seems like an unwise purchase. Fr. Rivera explains, “The merchant knows the true value of the pearl. He knows it is very special and because he knows this to be so, he knows what he is doing.”

Fr. Rivera states that, like the pearl, living out one’s vocation can bring the most happiness. “Our choice of vocation will determine much in our lives,” he wrote. “To be authentic is to be who we are, and who we are supposed to be”
