Remembering Fr. Daniel Harrington, SJ

Fr. Daniel Harrington, SJ.

On February 7, 2014, Fr. Daniel J. Harrington, SJ, passed away after battling prostate cancer. A longtime professor at Boston College, Fr. Harrington was recognized as one of the world’s leading New Testament scholars.

In addition to teaching, he wrote over 60 books during his career and edited the 18-volume Sacra Pagina series of New Testament commentaries for Liturgical Press. For three years, Fr. Harrington also wrote The Word column for America magazine.

In November 2013, friends, family members and former students gathered at Boston College to celebrate Fr. Harrington’s life. In an issue of The Boston College Chronicle, Fr. James Martin, SJ, said of his Jesuit brother, “In a sense, Dan’s teaching was very much like Jesus’ use of the parables, communicating complicated truths to us in simple ways. And as with Jesus’ parables, this was a great act of charity and love.” Click here to read more about the celebration for Fr. Harrington.

  1. Fr. Harrington was an outstanding biblical scholar who was able to translate his knowledge in a manner that made it accessible to non-scholars. Fr. Harrington and Raymond Brown were both instrumental in my own journey back to the Catholic faith.
